We have been working with the award-winning BBC Philharmonic orchestra for five years, creating print and outdoor advertising for their annual concert series at The Bridgewater Hall. The start of the project coincided with the orchestra’s move to their new, dedicated studio at MediaCityUK, Salford, with the core aims of attracting a wider audience and increasing ticket sales.
The main challenge was to capture the emotion and physicality of the music within the printed medium. We collaborated with Salford-based photographer and digital artist Andrew Brooks to provide the sense of journey and movement we wanted to achieve for each concert.
The imagery for the main brochure and the general pieces of print all went through Andrew’s bespoke method of converting untouched imagery into unique pieces of digital art. Every image is a composite work, built from many captures and put together in a way that allows the music and experience to become part of the end piece. From Gershwin to Elgar, each landscape has been intricately crafted to evoke the emotions of the music.
As the annual seasons continued, the themes for imagery also evolved, with more and more locations around the North being used for each concert.
The design for each season worked on a strong grid structure using the elegant and timeless Mrs Eaves typeface to reflect the heritage of the orchestra and the classical pieces that they perform. This grid and font are continued throughout all of the pieces, from 4-sheets and A3 posters to the individual concert leaflets and the main season brochure.
